Message place on a Z32 reveals an artist's sense of composition. No, surprise there, and of course it is dead on. While I found it persuasive I wondered how Ferrari makes their trademark lights fit in with its cars which are by nature wide and short, and have strong horizontal linearlty.

To learn this I looked over numerous Ferrari photos. One way the lights were integrated into designs of the 70s, 80s and early 90s, which had many distinct sharp lines and boxy elements, is that often the lights would be framed inside a rear grill with evenly radiused corners, or the back of the fenders when viewed straight on from the rear would be similarly radiused.

More contemporary Ferrari car bodies are much more curvaceous, but considerable lengths are still taken so that the circular tails lights complement the car. The curves of the lights reflect the compound curves of the fenders. Sometimes the lights are mounted in pairs within ovals, or emphasis is placed on other circular elements. A prime example of this later feature is framing the pairs or round exhaust pipes inside an opening with rounded corners.

Looking at the rear of a Z32 its easy to see why round lights look out of place. The rear is dominated by 5 straight parallel lines: the top of the spoiler, the top and bottom of the tail lights and center panel. the seam between the body and bumper and the crease that divides the bumper into two halves. There are curves on the rear of the car but they are not uniform radiuses, and are broken up and dominated by the straight lines that they are combined with. As it was designed, great lengths were taken to make the rear of the Z32 not look round which is why round lights look out of place there. Which brings me back to what you said.

The best way to predict the future is to create it.
